How to make a better podcast: Lessons from the Mel Robbins Podcast

What Mel Robbins Taught Me about Podcasting

Who is doing work that inspires you? Who is doing what you want to do? Have you taken the time to study what they are doing and how they’re doing it?

As a musician and songwriter, I studied my guitar and songwriting heroes. This is how I learned to play guitar and write songs. As a podcast producer and video creator, I study the podcasters, shows, and YouTube channels that inspire me to do better work.

Why Study The MEl Robbins Podcast?

For this exercise, we are going to study Mel Robbins. She’s a podcaster, author, and speaker with over a million subscribers on her YouTube channel. She’s a Gen Xer like me and we share many life and pop culture experiences. What resonates with me most is that she does not pretend to sound like she’s got life all figured out, but she’s definitely a few steps ahead of me!

I know from listening to her podcast that my friends and I would invite her to hang out around the fire pit with us, and she would fit right in. She’s funny, a fantastic storyteller, and not afraid to drop an F-bomb.

Mel Robbins is crystal clear on her mission and purpose, which is to help people live a better life and give them the tools to do it. Her “why” is her North Star. It guides her podcast and all of the other content she creates.

She is my favorite example of a podcaster and videomaker who always acts like herself and makes content with the goal of using it on multiple platforms. It’s essential to be intentional with what you’re creating and think about how you can share it in multiple places so that you can reach the most people and get the most out of it.

When planning your content, consider how to repurpose it. I’m breaking down the episode “Feel Like Giving Up? Before You Say F*** It”. This is a 48-minute masterclass for any coaching or consulting business. I’m breaking it down for you in this video and podcast episode.

Watch the video or listen to the podcast episode for the full breakdown. I’ve also included time stamps for the highlights in both the podcast and YouTube video. Grab a pen and take notes.
