Do you love Dolly Parton? I do. Coat of Many Colors has made me cry on days when the meanness in the world feels a little extra heavy. It hits harder when you think about the bullies going after someone for showing up happy and proud, just trying to live their best life.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it hits harder in June, PRIDE month.
There’s no better time to get clicks and stir the pot than June, when you’re spewing anti-LGBTQ thoughts. There was a woman who recently wrote a piece attacking Dolly Parton for her support of the LGBTQ+ community. She questioned how Dolly was practicing her faith. Apparently, Dolly isn’t “Christian-ing” the right way.
Not that Dolly needed me to stand up for her, but I felt the urge to respond. I was fired up.
This brings us to the point where Dolly Parton, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Creativity play together in my brain.
Rather than attack the woman with a snarky song in response, I created something I hoped would serve the highest good in my various communities – creatives, content creators, Jiu-Jitsu folks, and LGBTQ+. If people beyond these communities find value – BONUS!
My songs, podcast episodes, and videos weave together the “coat of many colors” I wear out into the world. It’s not uncommon for me to DELETE and BLOCK comments on YouTube videos I’ve posted.
Don’t let the bullies keep you from proudly creating and wearing your coat of many colors out into the world. Focus on what you want to create. Don’t get distracted by the meanies, the bullies, or anyone else who wants to tell you that you’re doing it wrong.
DO IT ANYWAY!
